This is an unusual and rare Antique 1800’S cased matching trousse set intended for an aristocrat or wealthy traveler or perhaps affluent Sporting Gent for use in hunting trips or safaris. The overall quality, artisanship and craftsman ship are exceptional for this type of set and was undoubtedly custom made to order.
The custom made elongated ovoid shaped clamshell case is 5 1/8” long x 1 15/16” wide x 1 9/16” tall and is in mint condition, which suggests very little use overall. The case is made with shaped wooden clamshell halves and covered with textured burgundy veneer leather with a fancy embossed border and inside line border on both sides. The inside top clamshell is lined with red velvet and the bottom clamshell is lined with pink silk with an underlying cushioning material. The hinge is a 5-piece piano style made from brass, and there is a small spring-loaded brass push button in the front top that releases the brass closing latch that engages with a thin brass lip on the end of the bottom clamshell that works properly. There is a small area on the inside end where the silk lining has worn, revealing the wooden shell construction.
All 3 implements have brass liners on both sides with a center back spring, and each are constructed like a knife, with each piece having its own back spring. The outside spoon and fork pieces have German silver Master pins that secure the beveled German silver bolsters and the brass liners with 2 additional brass pins to secure the liners and scales to their back spring. Each scale has one small brass pin at the top. The center knife piece has a brass Master pin and 2 brass pins to secure the liners to their backspring. The outside spoon and fork pieces have brass liners with two studs that engage in the slots on both sides of the middle knife piece. The center knife piece has brass liners with two keyhole slots on each side that engage the 2 brass studs of the outer fork and knife pieces.
The 3-piece trousse set is 8” open and 4 7/16” closed. The spoon is not magnetic and is made from German silver and is 3 5/8” long. The steel fold out corkscrew is 1 9/16” long with a full tip. The fork is magnetic and made from nickel plated steel and is 3 ½” long. The steel knife blade is 3 ½” long and has no edge nicks, a full tip. The blade has very light spidering overall that has been cleaned of any dark patina, and now has a sightly dull appearance yet has most of its orginal polish underneath. There are 2 very small spots of deep blood pitting near the left ricasso, caused by drops of blood not being clean from the blade. Blood is extremely corrosive and can cause deep pitting overnight. All 3 implements, as well as the corkscrew, have strong snap.
Overall, this Deluxe trousse set is in very fine to minty condition with light handling marks and natural aged patina; to wit, there is extremely fine naturally occurring aging that can be seen with magnification and 2 tiny spots on the German Silver bolsters that are in untouched condition. This piece was custom made and was complex to create, with 3 individual implements that fit together in one small handheld multifunctional accessory with a beautiful burgundy leather covered wood case with silk and velvet lining. It is surprising this piece is unmarked. However, the quality, style suggests it to be handmade by a European Artisan and Craftsman, probably French or possibly English.
This trousse would have been a necessary accoutrement for any affluent traveler in the 1800’s, when individuals had to be mindful of unknown contaminants, infections, and diseases with little known cures vs. today, and had to provide their own eating implements. This piece is as good as it gets for a set of this kind, i.e., age, rarity, condition, quality, and eye appeal.  Not only was this a necessary utilitarian object, but also an Object D’ Art and status symbol at the time for a wealthy aristocrat, gentleman of means, or affluent patron. This piece dates to the second half of the 19

century.
