This is a piece of Mata Ortiz pottery by artist
David Bejarano
.
Señor
Bejarano's
rich skill is seen in his creation of wildlife imagery. This piece is the shape of the native pumpkins which grow in the area. The glaze is a rich terra cotta. The glaze has small green specks within it that are difficult to photograph.
Señor
Bejarano
etches through terra cotta glaze down to the natural white native clay. Eventually the imagery of abundant mammal, insect, plant and bird life is
reveal. This method is called 'sgraffito', a time honored technique going back a thousand years in the New World.
There is a world of life in this pottery. Several multi-armed, large Cardon reach upwards. They are surround by browsing deer and rams. A woodpecker works on
retrieving
insects from inside agave stocks, and a dove perches on the yucca flowers. A butterfly rides on the air currents while a javelina pokes his head out from behind a prickly pear. A poinsettia inspired plant vines its way up through all the activity. Great
t
ime and great skill was put into creating this one of a kind pottery. Señor
Bejarano's
talents are front and center here.
This pottery is
formed from materials retrieved from the natural resources of the surrounding environment. The design is of Señor Bejarano's own personal creation and traditional style.
His signature is on the bottom
.

Mata Ortiz is legendary, both the village and the pottery taking it's name, and I am proud to be the largest and most trusted seller of these works on eBay!
In the 70's a young man began experimenting with recreating ancient pottery he would come across. He used the same clay sand mixtures from materials found in the area in which the ancients lived and made their pottery. The same firing techniques using the same local materials eventually created the same magnificent results. Half a century later and much of the village of Mata Ortiz has taken on these incredible skills for creating masterpieces, with each artist contributing hers and his own sense of beauty.
The designs are bold, earthy and individualistic.
Paint brushes consisting of one or two human hairs create the finest lines. Paints are developed from minerals found in the surrounding desert. These creations are truly unique transformations that only this small little region of the world can create from it's own soil.
I have been tangentially around Mata Ortiz for 30 years. Now I am spiritually bound by their overwhelming beauty and intense and intricate designs. When I look at one of the pieces, I feel I am meeting in person the artist who created this, and am visiting her home.
