vintage 7 in. Gyrosphere for use in a Gyro Compass -- used in ship/boat navigation and guidance-- found with another unit labeled 'Hokushin,' which merged with Yokogawa -- possibly WWII vintage but likely newer -- enclosed in the original wood carrying case with a metal data plate with Japanese characters -- case measures 10 by 9 3/4 by 9 3/4 in.

the bakelite ring that covers the electrode ring is loose -- some scuffing and scratching overall but in generally ok condition

"A gyrocompass detects the direction of true north by means of a fast-spinning rotor, which is suspended with no friction and is influenced by gravity and rotation of the Earth. A gyrocompass consequently indicates a ship's heading. The ship's heading is transmitted to repeater compasses and other ship's equipment after the signal format is converted to serial data or to stepper or analog signals depending on what type of format the equipment requires.
