Description
The rare, authentic antique, the second half of the 18th century, Polish sword, Karabela, with slightly curved wide and very sharp single-edged blade, with the false edge at the back toward the point, cut on each face with a broad full-length fuller. A hilt comprised of characteristic Karabela form, grip, secured to the blade's tang by three steel rivets with faceted heads. Enclosed by steel straps with the small loop on the pommel for the chain. A recurved steel crossguard with the langets and beveled bud shaped terminals with a small loop for a chain.
In its original wooden scabbard bound in hand-stitched leather and
mounted with a large, iron mounts. Polish swords with this type of blade
and the recurved crossguard has been used in Poland during the second
half of the 18th century.

CONDITION: Age and usage are showing. Missing chain connecting the pommel with the crossguard, the collar on the inner side of the upper part mounting (locket) is broken off. However, the sword is in good condition considering its age to be over 250- years old. The sword is free of any repairs or restoration.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Polish Karabela swords were made in two versions: costume parade Karabela and combat Karabela. This one is a typical combat Karabela sword.
