    Description

This attractive u-shaped pint mug by Robert Whyte comes from the collection of Dr. Ian Robinson. My father described it as "a great mug by Robert Whyte, Edinburgh (1805 - 1851d). Footed, low band, disc of metal". Presumably, the "disc of metal" was in reference to the footed base. Whyte's touch mark is clearly visible on the inside bottom as is the Edinburgh County verification mark at the lip (see Marks and Marking of Weights and Measures of the British Isles by Carl Ricketts, page 131).
Standing about 4 and 7/8 inches tall and weighing 1 lb 4 oz, the piece is in good condition. There's a little wave in the base in one spot, along with a very thin strip of glossy paint in another (about an inch long) but these are really very minor. See the photos. Initials P W are stamped on the outside bottom -- perhaps those of the pub owner?
