Description
Rare Antique second half of the 16th century Central European , Hungarian or Polish combat Mace Buzdygan, Buzogányok.
DETAILS: A large hand forged iron head of bulbous form formed of nine widening flanges, each individually slid into to the central core tube of octagonal section and copper-soldered, fitted on the top with a rounded finial. With an integral tapered tube-shaped hand forged, iron socket with copper soldered seam, fitted with turned wood tubular haft incised with groove for suspension rope.
Exceptionally large and heavy mace used as insignia signifying a high commander possibly in the rank of Hetman and combat weapon .

4.With a similar mace is depicted on a 16th century woodblock portrait, Nikola IV Zrinski or Miklós IV Zrínyi known as Nikola Šubić Zrinski (1507- 1566) Croatian -Hungarian general and Hungarian governor (Ban) of Croatia.

MEASUREMENTS:
Overall length: 55.5 cm (21.85 inches)
Width of the head at the widest point:11.5 cm (4.53 inches)
Height of the head including finial:11cm (4.33)
WEIGHT: 1.92 kg (4.23 lb.)
CONDITION: showing age and usage, slightly pitted, flanges with some deposit of copper used to soldering individual parts of the mace one flange with combat impact crack near the central tube). Previous owner had professionally cleaned by hand the metal part from rust, and removed an old paint from the handle, which someone once painted it and then varnished it.

PROVENANCE: This mace comes together with other antique Polish arms and armour from an old Canadian collection of Polish antiques and art including antique Polish arms and armour.
We had attached to the listing a picture of the mace in this collection which we had taken at the time of the purchasing of this collection, showing this mace together with other maces: the second mace from the left.
