    Cast bronze icons were considered a sign of piety and were kept by many people from any class. Bronze icons retain their original appearance for more than 100 years without restoration, and this is their value. In churches, cast bronze icons often occupied a place of honor above the Royal gates. Bronze icons became especially popular in the 19th century.
    There was also a period of prohibition in the history of icon casting. In 1722, a Royal decree forbade the use of such icons in churches and homes. They were preserved mainly by the old believers. But by the middle of the 19th century, workshops producing cast icons were operating all over Russia.
