He developed the character of Jiminy Cricket for Pinocchio and was then promoted to Animation Supervisor on Dumbo, Fantasia, Saludos Amigos, The Three Caballeros, Alice In Wonderland, Cinderella, and Peter Pan.
Two of the Animated Shorts he created for Disney, "Toot, Whistle, Plunk And Boom" and "It’s Tough To Be A Bird” won Academy Awards. In the 1956 book, “The Story of Walt Disney”, Walt is quoted as saying, “Ward is one man who works for me I am willing to call a genius.”
In the 1950’s, Walt wanted some programs on his new Television Show about Space Travel, and assigned Ward Kimball as the Animation Director to Produce and Host them.
Kimball wrote, directed and Co-Hosted three landmark shows for the Disneyland TV Series that explored the science (and fantasy) of space travel.
Working with scientists Willy Ley, Heinz Haber, Ernst Stuhlinger and Werner Von Braun, Kimball’s first effort was the 1955 program, “Man In Space”. “Man And The Moon” followed later that year, and “Mars And Beyond” in 1957.
Ward Kimball came out of retirement to help develop the “World Of Motion” for EPCOT in the early 1980’s. He produced and directed some innovative and funny shows in this exhibit.
One Scene that comes to mind in the “World Of Motion” was “The First Traffic Jam” that humorously depicted a collision of a Horse and Cart with a Horseless Carriage on a city street intersection. Ward Kimball was a “Master” of the “Animation Gag”. He was a “genius” at making fun of things and showing them in a satirical style!
