In 1941, she traveled with Walt Disney & other artists on a Good Neighbor Tour of South America. Blair was named Art Supervisor for The Three Caballeros and Saludos Amigos. This photo taken at Rio de Janeiro is of Mary and her husband, Lee Blair, who was also a Disney Artist.
Mary Blair’s work at the Walt Disney Studios in the 1940’s & 50’s was prolific. As a “Concept Artist”, Blair brought to life the ideas from the written words of a scipt, book or description. Walt Disney loved her art and championed it at the studio for her concepts & color stylings in Dumbo, Cinderella, Peter Pan and Alice In Wonderland.
In 1964, Disney agreed to create a pavilion for the World’s Fair in New York for UNICEF and PEPSI. Disney selected Mary Blair to design & create “It’s A Small World”. That attraction was purely Mary Blair in style & concept!
Mary Blair created many large murals for Disney Parks. her last mural was for Walt Disney World’s Opening in 1971 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.
Her 90 foot centerpiece Mural for the Atrium of the Grand Canyon Concourse of the Contemporary Resort actually dwarfs the Disney Monorail Trains as they pass through the Contemporary Hotel!
Mary Blair was married to fellow Disney Artist Lee Blair and was the Sister-in-Law Preston Blair. Mary Blair passed away in 1978, however, the impact she left on Disney Films & Theme Parks endures.
